Ocular Disease - Fort Worth

Mission Statement

The Ocular Disease Residency Program at Community Eye Clinic is a one-year post-doctoral, clinical training program in the diagnosis and management of ocular disease and ocular manifestations of systemic disease. The residency provides advanced competency in knowledge and clinical skills through a scholarly, didactic, and clinical curriculum to highly qualified optometric graduates. Residents completing the program are expected to provide an advanced level of clinical care in ocular disease.

Program Description

Direct supervised patient care, as well as clinical attending experiences, will be completed at the Community Eye Clinic. The resident will participate in seminars and local optometric society continuing education meetings. Teaching involves supervision of fourth year professional students. The resident will work closely with the Program Coordinator and student externs. The resident, under the guidance of the Program Coordinator, will create a clinical seminar presentation for students and complete four written case reports suitable for publication. The resident will be encouraged to participate in poster and paper sessions at national optometric meetings.

Educational Opportunities

Research Responsibilities

Completion Requirements

  1. Eligibility for a state of Texas Optometry license no later than six months into the residency program.
  2. Deliver clinical services at a level which is satisfactory to the faculty, Program Coordinator, and the Directory of Residency Programs.
  3. Maintain a record of patient names and associated information
  4. Submit an abstract to a national or regional meeting.
  5. Deliver one presentation to fourth year optometry externs.
  6. Complete 4 case reports for potential publication.
  7. Read assigned scientific literature and maintain the Journal Library.
  8. Successfully complete all teaching assignments.
  9. Attend required seminars and continuing education programs.
  10. Complete all required evaluations of faculty, program, Program Coordinator.

Program Admission Requirements:

  1. Doctor of optometry degree (OD) from an Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) accredited school or college of optometry
  2. Two letters of reference from clinical faculty members
  3. Copy of all optometry transcripts
  4. Curriculum Vitae and a letter of intent
  5. Successful completion of NBEO Part I, Part II and TMOD prior to commencement of the residency program
  6. Preference is given to candidates with a 3.0(out of 4.0) GPA or higher
