Primary Care Optometry
Mission Statement
The mission of the Primary Care Optometry Residency program is to provide qualified post-doctoral optometric graduates with advanced clinical experiences and knowledge in primary care optometry through direct patient care in diverse clinical settings. The resident will further advance their clinical knowledge and evidence-based decision making by engaging in didactic and scholarly activities. Additionally, the residency program will promote the development of life-long learning skills that will enable residents to provide high quality patient-centered care throughout their optometric career. Residents who complete the program are prepared to provide an advanced level of clinical care in multiple aspects of primary care optometry, and serve as educators in academic settings and/or serve the profession of optometry as leaders in the area of primary care.
Program Description
Founded in 1987, the University of Houston College of Optometry Primary Care Residency is a one-year advanced training program designed to enhance the resident's clinical skills and knowledge base in primary care optometry through direct patient care, self-study, and scholarly pursuits. The Residency Program is currently offering one position for the 2025-2026 program year, based at the College in the Family Practice Service of the University Eye Institute. Residents rotate through specialty areas including low vision rehabilitation, pediatric optometry, specialty contact lenses, and ocular disease. Residents participate in ocular emergency triaging and care and interact with various optometric and ophthalmological subspecialists within and external to the University Eye Institute. In addition, Residents have the opportunity to participate in the teaching and training of optometry students through assignments as clinical instructors, grand rounds participants, seminar lecturers, and laboratory assistants.

Educational Opportunities
Direct supervised patient care experiences in primary care, rehabilitative optometry, contact lens, and pediatrics. Participation in graduate courses related to the field of interest is available. Attendance and participation in faculty and resident seminars and clinical grand rounds. Observation of senior clinicians providing direct patient care. Interaction with ophthalmologists who serve as clinic faculty in the Medical Eye Service at the University Eye Institute. External rotations are available on an elective basis.Teaching Responsibilities
Participation in laboratory teaching opportunities in areas such as primary care and medical procedures. Supervise third and fourth year professional students in the Family Practice, Cornea and Contact Lens Services, and/or community based clinics affiliated with the University of Houston College of Optometry.Research Responsibilities
Participation in ongoing research at the University of Houston. Completion of a paper suitable for publication based on original research in the area of primary care optometry.Completion Requirements
- The resident is required to deliver clinical services at a level, which demonstrates they have attained the core competencies specific to their program. This attainment will be determined through formal evaluations of the resident's patient care.
- The resident is required to keep a log of patient names and associated information.
- The resident must complete the scholarly project requirements specific to their program. This is either original or library research resulting in a paper of publishable quality.
- The resident is required to deliver three rounds-style presentations..
- The resident is required to successfully complete all clinical rotations assigned in the core and elective curriculum.
- The resident is required to successfully complete all teaching assignments.
- The resident must attend required seminars, journal clubs and case discussions.
- The resident must complete all required evaluations of clinical attendings, rotations, their Program Coordinator and of the Residency Program.
- The Director of Residency Programs in conjunction with the Residency Program Coordinator
will recommend the granting and certification to the Dean. Upon completing all requirements
of the program to the satisfaction of the Program Coordinator and Director of the
Residency Programs, a certificate of completion will be awarded to the resident.
Curriculum requirements in hours:
5 day work week between 43 to 47 hours per week; including after hours on-call.
The following are required for program admission:
- Doctor of optometry degree (OD) from a school or college of optometry accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE)
- Two letters of reference from clinical faculty members
- Copy of all optometry transcripts
- Curriculum Vita and a letter of intent
- Passage of all parts of the NBEO prior to the beginning of the residency
- A State of Texas Optometry license (completion of jurisprudence testing prior to beginning of program)
- Preference is given to candidates with a 3.0 (out of 4.0) GPA or higher
